The USS Ranger is a Defender Class ship whose design is derived from that of the Sovereign Class.  the most visual difference is that of the weapons pod which has been attached to the top of the vessel.  The USS Ranger is used as a fast response vessel to defend against incursions into Federation Space by hostile forces.
